Cuban economy continues in a recovery phase in spite of the still existing difficulties. Particularly, several sectors, such as tourism and fishing, have showed a steady growth, and there are outstanding developments in products such as nickel, tobacco, citrus, cocoa and rum. Sugar industry remains in a fundamental place within Cuban economy, considering it accounts for 37% of Cuban exports. Structural changes in economy are already perceived, a fact appraised by businessmen all over the world. Tourist sector is today the most dynamic in the island's economy, contributing in the recovery of several other industries as well, among them in food industry, light industry, and metal-mechanics. The presence of Cuban products has increased substantially in border market, reaching 42% of total. There are other sectors - for instance, the cases of pharmaceutics and biotechnology - that have registered a discrete growth. Fostering and diversifying non-traditional exports have an important development potential, having in mind existing and perspective productive capacities. There are advances in this field, as the country keeps on working toward that direction. |
